How Much Rooftop Solar Do You Need to Zero-Out Your MP Electricity Bill?

You don't need to be an engineer to size a solar system. With two numbers from your electricity bill, you can estimate exactly how much rooftop solar it takes to bring your Madhya Pradesh bill to near zero.
Step 1: Find your monthly units
Look at your MP DISCOM bill for units consumed (kWh) per month. If you only know the rupee amount, divide it by roughly ₹8 per unit (an indicative MP domestic slab). So a ₹4,000 bill ≈ 500 units.
Step 2: Convert units to system size
In Madhya Pradesh, 1 kW of solar generates about 120–130 units a month (based on ~4–4.5 peak sun-hours a day). To find your size:
System size (kW) = Monthly units ÷ 125
For 500 units: 500 ÷ 125 = 4 kW.
Step 3: Check your roof
You need about 100 sq. ft of shadow-free roof per kW. A 4 kW system needs roughly 400 sq. ft, a modest terrace. South-facing, unshaded space is ideal, but east/west works too with a small yield trade-off.
Step 4: Estimate the savings
A system sized to your consumption offsets almost your entire bill. That ₹4,000-a-month home saves close to ₹48,000 a year, and with tariffs rising ~3% annually, well over ₹15 lakh across 25 years.
A quick reference
| Monthly bill | ~Units | System size | Roof area |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹2,000 | 250 | 2 kW | ~200 sq. ft |
| ₹4,000 | 500 | 4 kW | ~400 sq. ft |
| ₹6,000 | 750 | 6 kW | ~600 sq. ft |
Don't oversize
Under net metering, exporting far more than you consume doesn't pay: MP settles surplus at a modest rate, and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy caps at 3 kW. Size to your actual consumption plus a small buffer, not to your roof's maximum.

Frequently asked questions
How many units does 1 kW of solar generate in MP?
Roughly 120–130 units a month, based on about 4–4.5 peak sun-hours a day across Madhya Pradesh. A 3 kW system therefore makes around 360–390 units a month.
How much roof area do I need per kW?
About 100 sq. ft of shadow-free roof per kilowatt. A 3 kW system needs roughly 300 sq. ft.
